We were extremely lucky to welcome dual Paralympian gold medallist Josh Hose to our school community on Friday. For those unaware of Josh’ story, he spoke to Year 9-10 students and staff about how on 26 January 2005, he was involved in a car accident that left him a C6 – C7 paraplegic: Josh dislocated a vertebra when the roof of his car collapsed after a rollover. He ended up spending two weeks in amedically induced coma during his recovery. His subsequent paralysis is from the waist down. Josh shared the recovery process; returning back home to Camperdown; and his subsequent inspiring journey towards playing and representing Australia in Wheelchair Basketball at both the London and Rio Olympics. Students were given an explanation of the game and the different classifications of disability and had time for questions and photos with the GOLD medals that Josh was a part of at both Olympics. He provided many succinct takeaway messages about the kids and is a local role model for our students to draw strength from.
“It was really good, really inspiring. Just because he had a major setback it didn’t stop him from achieving something great” Rose Morrisey “He made the most of his challenges – he turned a bad situation into something he could be proud of” - Tarnya Gration “A great role model – it just goes to show that you’re not invincible and car accidents can happen to anyone. Still a happy go lucky bloke even though he was wheelchair bound” Brad McKenzie

I would like to thank all Glenfyne Gold students who participated in the swimming sports last week, all students who swam did so to the best of their abilities. I suspect it was only Tandarook’s underhand techniques during the cork scramble that gave them the lead! I especially need to highlight the efforts of our leaders; Marcus Watson, Natalie Meade, George Gay and Rose Morrissey. They led by example and encouraged and promoted a co-operative atmosphere.
In other sporting news one of our Glenfyne students, Lachlan Stephenson recently represented Terang in a basketball team in a Dandenong and Eltham basketball tournament. 1400 teams competed and Lachlan’s team won their division! Lachlan said they have never competed in a big city tournament before and when they won the organisers had no idea where Terang was. Well done Lachlan, a quiet achiever. Keeping on sport, this Friday students will be placed in events for the house athletics on Tuesday the 7 th of March. We hope to see lots of Gold/yellow in every event and on the side lines supporting and keeping the other houses honest.
The Glenfyne Pot of Gold
This is a small kitty of money to which any student can donate any amount at any time. The student leadership team, under teacher facilitation, will be able to spend this money as they see fit. Fitting with the phrase, ‘charity begins at home’, we are try to encourage the idea that we should be taking some responsibility for the place we live and work in, be it the physical environment, the atmosphere or the sense of camaraderie.
