Cobden Technical School aims to provide a well balanced and informative introduction to Science that will provide the basis for a smooth transition into the middle years and VCE. Science is taught as a series of topics which are essentially based upon Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science.

KEY SKILLS DEVELOPED IN YEARS 7 AND YEAR 8 SCIENCE ARE:
Development of safe work practices and competence in the manipulation and use of basic laboratory equipment.
To be able to conduct controlled experiments and write reports.
To accurately observe and record data.
To use the particle model to explain physical and chemical phenomena.
To be able to use simple dynamics and mechanics to explain phenomena including friction, air resistance and non-contact forces.
To be able to devise and use simple keys for the classification of items.

Course content for Year 7 Science:

Laboratory safety and equipment.
Working with simple items of laboratory equipment and using them to observe chemical and physical changes, and to effect separations of mixtures.
Use of classification schemes for living organisms.
Investigating the structure and properties of solids, liquids and gases.
The study of Physics leading into the concept of a force.
The study of Biology leading to an understanding of the characteristics of plants and animals.

Course content for Year 8 Science:

Atomic structure, elements, reactions of the elements and formation of compounds.
The effects of radiation, convection and conductors.
Forces, the force of gravity, surface tension and elasticity.
Cells and their internal structure.
Our place in space, the motion of planets and moons against a background of stars.
Students are required to complete practical activities, maintain workbooks and complete assessment tasks.
