In Year 7, students are introduced to the knowledge and skills of the metalwork industry. Students cover areas of safety in the workshop and the appropriate use of tools and equipment before any practical work is commenced. Once students have acquired some basic metal working skills, they then complete a toolbox as their main design project.

Skill areas covered are:

  • Measuring
  • Marking out
  • Cutting
  • Joining and riveting
  • Folding
  • Research
  • Evaluation

All projects completed in both Year 7 and Year 8 are based on practical skills for the student. There is a steady increase in difficulty in the projects as students move through the course. Students acquire a basic knowledge of the skills and knowledge of materials and production through investigation and hands-on experience.
